This is rather stunning etching and aquatint by the British landscape printmaker and artist, Phil Greenwood.
He was born in 1943 in Dolgellau, North Wales, but not lives in Kent. He studied at Hornsey College of art and later taught printmaking for a short time. He has been working as a professional artist and printmaker since 1971 (the date of this print).
He has exhibited extensively throughout this country and abroad, both in one man shows and as a contributor to many major exhibitions. His work is in many private and public collections, such as the Arts Council, the British Council, the Tate Gallery and the Greenwich Museum.
He works on large copper plates and specialises in the use of etching and aquatint. Greenwood often uses only two plates to form an image and to apply only two or three colours to each print. His work shows a great feeling for tone and colour, often achieved by overprinting colours, rich tones and shapes. His subject matter features rural landscape - they are not specific places but are a fusion of actual places and memory. The atmosphere or mood of the location is more important in his work than an accurate representation of a scene.
Phil Greenwood was invited to become an Associate of the Royal Society of Painters-Etchers in 1972 and elected a Fellow in 1982.
This large etching and aquatint is an early work by Greenwood, dating to 1971. It is called Stone Pool and comes from an edition of only 90 works.
Here, the artist has concentrated on depicting all the stones and pebbles surrounding a little sleepy pool. His exemplary use of aquatint suggest all the shades and textures found in this rather barren landscape. Every little stone has been captured and form almost a carpet of varying textures in the foreground. In the distance we see the little pool. It is fed with a white waterfall - and this runs down from a bracken covered hillside.
My "Stone Pool" print is in excellent condition with no issues. It is sold with a new acid-free window mount and is all ready just to be fitted into a frame of your choice. It is certainly a stunning early work by this artist - he must have spend a lot of time capturing all the fine details in this print.
