This is a fine, almost photographic, colour etching and aquatint by the British artist and printmaker, Graham Evernden (b. 1947).
It is an Artist's Proof and signed as such in pencil. The print is entitled on the lower margin "Grasshopper Brook".
Evernden was born in Kent and in the 1970s graduated from Maidstone College of Art. He was based in London where he originally worked as a graphic designer.
In 1974 he left London and made a career change becoming a free-lance artist concentrating on illustrating and printmaking. In 1975 he was elected a member Printmakers Council and his work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers.
This print must date to the later part of the 1970s on a stylistic basis as it has not been dated. Evernden's work produced today is very much in a different style with more vibrant colours and are much more abstract.
This etching is almost photographic in feel and it certainly is a very fine etching and colour aquatint by the Evernden. It is called Grasshopper Brook and you can see the little river running out of the composition towards the lower right corner. A little rustic humpback bridge crosses the brook. It is a winter scene and the rural landscape is covered in snow. In the mid-distance is a little country cottage with slopping roof and another converted barn behind. I love the two wisps of smoke billowing out of the chimneys. The sun is low in the sky and it is a hazy day. The sunlight just manages to be seen above the tree tops in the distance - and there is a very pale lemon glow. A big tree devoid of leaves with spindly branches dominates the space behind the dwelling house. Brrrr! you can almost feel how cold it is in the little hamlet.
