This is a fine late 1970s etching by Kathleen Caddick.
It is printed on good thick-textured wove paper and is in excellent damage-free condition. It is an artist's proof and is signed in pencil in the lower margin, as photographed.
Caddick specialised in these bleak winter landscapes and excelled at depicting trees devoid of leaves and set against a winter skyline. They were often given generic titles, such as Tracks, in the Snow, Melting Snow, Winter Landscape etc.
This one show a copse of winter trees in the distance with a snow covered path leading up to the woods. A little wire fence is to the foreground and it marks the furthermost boundary of the farm track. The work is coloured with subtle washes of browns and yellows: shades that would have bathed a British winter landscape. Her works are always very atmospheric and often devoid of any signs of life.
Kathleen Caddick was born in 1937 in Liverpool. She grew up in Buckinghamshire and studied at High Wycombe School of Art. She worked as a graphic design lecturer before taking up her artistic career full-time in 1968. She published her first etching in the late 1970s. Her work has been exhibited and collected widely in the UK, Germany, USA, Canada and the Far East.
She has worked on commissions for the National Trust and Woodland Trust. Her subject matter of trees and their muted colours has remained constant throughout her career. Her images always featured bleached grasses, weathered posts and buildings, melting snow and glimpses of distant hills seen through a hazy sky. They all express the feeling of space, peace and solitude.
Caddick showed extensively in the Britain, where Belgravia Contemporary Arts sold her work, in the Middle East and gained a large following in Germany. In 1977 a major show of her pictures toured Europe.
This print is in exceptional condition and it is certainly a fabulous, almost photographic image. It has been recently re-mounted with a new fresh acid-free window mount. It is ready for you to send to your local framer and you can select a frame of your choice for it.
