This is another post-war German surrealist print that I have in my store. It is by Heinz Trokes (1913 - 1977).
Trokes was an influential painter, printmaker and teacher. He was born in Hamborn an Rhein, Germany in 1913. He studied art from 1933 and 1936 - when he moved to Augsburg were he worked as a textile designer. In 1937, on a trip to Paris, he met Wassily Kandinsky, whose work would remain a steady influence on Trokes for the majority of his career.
The first solo exhibition offered to Trokes was to take place in 1938 at the Nierendorf Gallery in Berlin. Like Zimmermann (see my lithograph by him on my website) his artistic career was much curtailed during the National Socialist rule and WWII.
Following the end of the War, he helped to found the first private gallery in Berlin during its reconstruction, the Gerd Rosen Gallery, where he was director until 1946.

This rare print is an original etching, signed in pencil and has the edition number 15/110. It is not dated. The catalogue raisonne of his works dates it to 1946. It is a very rare early work by this artist. It is titled: Journey Between House and Plants (Fahr Zwischen Hausern Und Pflanzen).
It is another strange German surrealist image. It features three entwined abstract heads combined with a random placement of buildings, fruits and wheels. It is certainly a quirky and most dreamlike image. The style of this print shows a fusion of influences coming from Kandinsky, as well as Trokes work designing textiles and stained glass. The forms are restructured with sharp, fragmented geometric formations.
It has been re-framed with a new window mount and simple black frame. The frame measures 34.5 x 16.8 cm. The image is 11.5 x 8.5 cm.
