Henry Wilkinson was a master engraver of mainly sporting subjects, who produced engravings of sporting dogs and country sports from the mid 1950's onwards. He studied engraving at the Royal College of Art, and honed his skills while working as an assistant to famous canine and wildlife engraver George Vernon Stokes.
He produced his limited editions and did everything in the creative process from creating the design, to engraving, printing and finishing - even producing his own printing inks.
These lively curling prints are full of action - and are keenly sought be curling and Scottish winter sports enthusiasts. This is a harder original curling print by Wilkinson to source- it is in good vintage condition.
I love the figure of the Highlander in the centre about to throw his curling stone. Wilkinson has used colour to highland the red tartan of his kilt and brown to show off his heavy knitted jumper. He also is shown wearing a wee Tam O'Shanter bonnet. There is a lot g grey plate tone left on the plate - this adds to a feeling of it being a cold Scottish winter day. The sun is lying low in the sky and casting long dark shadows on the frozen ice.
The print is in good condition with no staining to the sheet or any damages. It comes framed and ready to hang.
Dimensions: The frame is 47.5 x 52.5 cm. The image size is 21.5 x 31 cm. It is signed lower right: Henry Wilkinson.
