This is the a little volume that were published by Walker & Anderson in Edinburgh in 1818.
It is called "The Miniature Museum of Scotch Songs, written by Scots Poets, with music arrange for the Voice and Pianoforte by the most eminent Composers". The engraver was done by Alexander Walker.
This is Vol 1 and consists of 145 pages. It is in good condition but there seem to be the a replacement title sheet, and pages one and two.
There is a letter dated 1970 from the Music Room at the National Library from the Research Assistant. It says that not a lot was known about the publication. It was mentioned in the 1954 publication "Music Publishing in the British Isles" (Cassel, London) by Humphries and Smith. They describe the history of the publishers but say little else about the volume itself.
This is Vol 1 and consists of 145 pages. It is in good condition but there seem to be the a replacement title sheet, and pages one and two. I think that these were xeroxed from a copy in the National Library of Scotland as the letter refers to a receipt for the copies. And there is a facsimile National Library Stamp on the frontispiece at the bottom. I think that the owner of the book back in 1970 had these bound into the volume towards the front and a whole new cover and binding made for the publication. The re-binding in the 1970s is a quality one. The cover consists of a burgundy/brown buckram type cover with matching leather corners (the cover looks more of a tan shade in my photos but it verges more to a wine tone). The spine is without issue and there are no bumping to the corners.
There are no inscriptions or previous owner's names - all the other pages are original to the Georgian publication - and the music scores have been printed from a copperplate (you can see the platemarks).
This is very much a publication of interest to scholars of early 19th century Scottish songs and music. They do not come on the market very often - regardless of the replaced three pages on this copy. I have taken this into account with my pricing. It is certainly a very rare book. The 1970s binding was properly undertaken and is a quality job.
I have taken lots of images for your inspection. The letter to the previous owner sent by National Library will be included with the book.
