Janice Tchalenko (b 1942) trained as a studio potter in the late ‘60s.
She later joined the team at Darlington Pottery Workshop in 1984, to design ranges of table and giftware closely based on her techniques and aesthetic. The bright colourful designs made an immediate impact and in 1988 the ‘Leopard’ pattern won the First Manchester Prize for Art in Production. Later that year the Pottery won the 'Radio Times BBC Enterprise Competition for Small Businesses'.
She also worked with Designers Guild on a range of fabrics based on her ceramic surface patterns.
Janice has been a part-time lecturer at Camberwell School of Art and The Royal College of Art for most of her career and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Art. Her work is included in many public collections (including being on display in the Ceramics Gallery at the V&A) both nationally and internationally.
This is one of her mass-produced items decorated with a pattern called Poppy, It is one of Janice Tchalenko’s early designs for Dartington Pottery. She did a range of tureens similar to this one with twisted handles - but with different decorative patterns and finials on the lid. These tureens are lovely items and look fabulous on display in a dresser in a kitchen - or indeed just for use!
This fine pot is in excellent condition with no damage. It is a nice large size, as you can see in my photographs. I love how the vibrant expressionist floral decoration has even been continued onto the foot of the tureen.. just a special design touch!
Dimensions. From handle to handle it is 9 inches. The height including the finial on the lid is 7 inches. The diameter of the top of the main body section is 5 3/4 inches. The diameter of the main body section is 7 inches.
The weight is nearly 1.4 kg - so a heavy pot!
