This is a collectable antique stoneware butter crock or pot. It is an antique piece of Scottish Pottery and was made by Port Dundas Pottery in Glasgow.
It has a lovely rustic design on the front showing a Danish dairy maid holding a wooden butter churn. This one was made for the UK market and other similar ones were made with the same decorative pattern but with the text in Danish. This pot would have stored butter in an old-fashioned grocers or in a dairy / farmhouse. It has no inner rim and was never intended to have a lid - so this is absent. It has a large applied carrying handle. It would have held about 3 lbs of butter, as annotated under the handle.
It has the impressed mark for Port Dundas Pottery, as photographed. It dates to the late 19th century.
The main body of the crock is in excellent damage free condition. The only issue with it was where the treacle glaze ran in the kiln - and turned a little black in the firing at the top.
It is certainly a lovely and collectable piece of Scottish rustic pottery and it would now look so good in a country cottage, barn conversion or farm shop. The Danish Dairy Co were located in Edinburgh and had lots of shops in the late Victorian and early Edwardian period.
The height of the crock is just over 5 1/2 inches - the diameter at the widest point is nearly 7 inches.
My asking price is a fair one given its fine condition and being a most collectable piece of antique Scottish stoneware. These as antique antique advertising items are much sought after.
