This is a very attractive and decorative "one-off" raku vase designed by David Howard Jones.
David Howard Jones (born 1953) designs and makes beautiful pots using the Raku technique where red-hot pots are dropped into often combustible materials to form random slightly iridescent finishes. The fine vase by Jones has a craquelure finish and applied geometric shapes in blue, black and brown glazes. It has a ribbed neck with horizontal coils with a blue glaze - and again the same effect on the tapered foot at the base.
The base has the artist's incised initials: DHJ, as photographed.
My vase looks good on display and the back and front are have different patterns - so you can choose which side to display at different times.
Dimensions: Height is 9 1/2 inches. The width at the widest point is 6 inches. The oval rim is 4 3/4 inches x 3 inches. It is 1.1 kg unpacked.
Jones is a CPA fellow and long standing senior lecturer in the Ceramics department of Wolverhampton University; he works in Leamington Spa, and his work features in a number of major collections.
