This is a very large and stunning piece of 1980s British studio glass. It takes the form of a large deep bowl with a flared rim. It is made of clear glass with an other casing of lustre white glass abstract shapes on the outside. It has a decorative black rim. It has been all hand-blown.
Anthony Stern was born in 1944 in Cambridge. He is best known for his avant-garde films and his amazing pieces of contemporary art glass.
As a young man, Stern knew the musician Syd Barrett and held a joint painting exhibition with him. He first started making films while at Cambridge University, then worked as assistant to the avant-garde documentary film maker Peter Whitehead. He moved to London and was involved in the film and music scene, including working with Pink Floyd on media projects.
Stern subsequently turned to making glass. This was prompted by his fascination with what could be achieved with creating pieces using a combination of colour and light. He completed an MA in Glass at the Royal College of Art, London.
His work was always sought after and example are in the collections of the rich and famous, including the late Queen, Sir Elton John, Sir Derek Jacobi and the Saudi Royal Family. Examples of Stern's glass is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and at the Broadfield House Glass Museum. He was certainly a very interesting artist and film maker, probably still very much under-valued by the general public and collectors.
This is an impressive large bowl by Stern - one of his "White Spiral" Range. It is of exceptional size. The diameter of the rim is 11 1/2 inches (29 cm). The height is about 5 1/2 inches (14 cm) and diameter of the base is 4 1/4 inches (11 cm). It is 2.3 kg in weight
It is signed Anthony Stern 1980 on the base, as photographed. This large bowl is more of a sculptural item - and it will be a bit of a show-stopper in a contemporary monochromatic interior. It looks so much better in "real life" than in my photographs.
