This is a fabulous large original 1980s Poster that was designed by David Hockney for the exhibition of costumes and set designs for the "Rake's Progress" at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The exhibition was held in 1981. The designs are for the Glyndebourne production of "The Rake's Progress" Opera.
The opera was first performed in from 1951 and consists of three acts and an epilogue by Igor Stravinsky. The production is based loosely on the famous 18th century suite of paintings and engravings by William Hogarth (1733 - 1735).
In this designsfor the poster Hockney has relied on the characteristics of Hogarth's etchings with cross hatching and parallel lines in the composition and has certainly created such stunning and playful set designs. This poster has been taken from the original pen and ink drawing for the Drop Curtain for the 1981 production.
It is certainly a large and stunning poster and it measures 75cm x 95cm. It is in good vintage condition and will look totally amazing all framed up and put on display. It has never been on display and I currently have it stored flat in my plan chest. I have taken a lot of images for your inspection - so that you can see all the details of the poster.
Due to its larger size we shall have to send the print in a very long tube - and this will push up your postage price. It will be send with Parcelforce24 and I will cap any postage costs at £14.95.
