This is another sought-after etching & drypoint by the celebrated marine artist, William Lionel Wyllie.

This fine, carefully observed artwork shows a view of Tynemouth. It is one of a series of six prints that Wyllie made featuring the Tyne. The series also included views of the Quayside at Newcastle, North Shields, High & Low Lights at Shields, Cullercoats and St Mary's Island (and this view of Tynemouth). The scene here is depicted with his usual meticulous detail and using his favoured panoramic format.

The etching shows the mouth of the River Tyne. There is a little lighthouse to the left hand side  I love how Wyllie has captured all the wisps of steam and smoke rising into the air from the large steamship coming into view across the horizon. Lots of little sailing boats flit about on the waves in the distance. There is a group of little boats in the foreground - taking up the rear is a little tug or steamer. The flotilla of little rowing boats are a hive of activity with crew busying about on the decks. I think that they are fishing as they are being followed by lots of hungry seagulls.

Wyllie was born in London in 1851. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools (1866-69), where he won the Turner Medal in his final year. He worked as a marine illustrator for the Graphic between 1870 and 1890.

Wyllie was Marine Painter to the Royal Yacht Squadron and the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, and did much work, including posters, for the Orient Company, the White Star Line and the Union-Castle Line.

Between 1924 and 1930 he worked on a fabulous panoramic oil painting depicting the Battle of Trafalgar for the Victory Museum, Portsmouth.

This etching is signed in pencil, lower left and undated. It is NOT a reproduction but an original pencil signed drypoint etching. It is not edition numbered and I think that it is an artist's proof - the drypoint work is all dark and sooty - and the lines are all nice and crisp before any wear has occurred to the copper plate.

As you can see from all my images - it is really a fine clean impression. The details are just exquisite and it is certainly an impression of museum quality.

It is in very good condition. The paper is nice and fresh with no foxing or marks on the sheet. The lines are nice and crisp suggesting an early pull from the plate - so certainly a few impression It is presented with new acid-free window mount  - and it all ready to be framed up.  If you would like it sent with a simple black frame - please discuss extra costs for this service.

Dimensions: The mount size is 29 x 49 cm. Image size is 16.3 x 37.7 cm.

I will cap the post at £10.00 and applied to your order at checkout.  Free Local delivery in Edinburgh.
