Kate (Katharine) Cameron was an accomplished landscape painter, as well as a talented etcher. She was born in Hillhead, Glasgow and was the sister of the celebrated printmaker, Sir DY Cameron. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1890 until 1893, under the innovative directorship of Fra Newbery. and subsequently at Colarossi's in Paris with Gustave Courtois.
Her etchings of the natural world focusing on wild flowers, bumble bees and butterflies are always most carefully observed and full of exquisite detail. They are very popular with collectors of her work.
In 1928 she married Arthur Kay, the art collector and connoisseur. Katherine Cameron was a prominent member of the Glasgow Society of Lady Artists and exhibited regularly both at home and abroad. Examples of her works are in the V&A, and the British Museum, London, as well as in Glasgow Art Gallery.
This is a fabulous and very sensitive etching by Kate Cameron. It is of an elongated shape influenced by the Japanese art. The etching is signed lower left in the plate and also in pen below on the lower margin.
The image shows a hedgerow with a selection of Scottish wildflowers - butterflies flit about the flowerheads looking for nectar. The bell-shaped flowers are all very delicate and I think that they are harebells which are particularly attractive to butterflies. The depiction of the scene is very sensitive and she captures all the details of the butterfly wings with great precision.
Dimensions: The Frame is 67 x 37 cm. The image is 48 x 17.8 cm. I think that this is probably one of her largest etchings. It is dated in the plate 1921.
CONDITION: It is a good clean impression with lots of drypoint on the butterflies. The sheet is nice and clean with no staining or foxing. There is a slight cockling to the paper - this is due to the fine Japanese papers that Kate Cameron favoured for her prints. The sheet has not been laid down or glued onto any backing board at any stage of its history.
This fine etching by Cameron is printed in brown ink and it is in fantastic condition - with no fading or condition issues of any kind. It has been given a new acid-free window mount and new frame - so it is just all ready for you to hang on your wall.
Dimensions: Frame size is 45 x 40 cm. The image size is 27 x 19.5 cm.
Such fine works by Cameron are keenly sought after - this is reflected in my asking price. Sadly, it would have to be posted to UK addresses only.
