This is a rare early still-life screenprint by the Scottish artist, Bel Cowie.
It is entitled "Red Geranium for an Oriental Carpet", and is signed and dated Feb 1980.
The artist has gone completely wide with pattern in this artwork. She has covered every inch of of the paper with colour, pattern and texture. It makes you quite dizzy with all the detail. The subject is described in the title (inscribed by the artist in pencil along the lower margin). The image shows a geranium with dull gold coloured leaves - it is set against a very decorative Oriental carpet - and the two forms are almost infused and it is hard to work out just where the geranium ends and the carpet begins. It looks just to fabulous on display!
Area of the darker tones were quite difficult to photograph and the glass had a tendency to be rather reflective - so please note that there are no white marks etc on the screenprint - these are probably just reflections on the glass.
The screenprint is a edition as No. 21 out of a small limited edition of only 23 impressions.

BIOGRAPHY: Bel Cowie was born in 1943 in Dundee. She was a painter in oil but is probably best known for her screenprints. Cowie trained at Gray's School of Art and Ceramische Fachschule, Berne.
Her work often reveals her fascination with Japanese prints and weaving designs. There is always a gentle delicacy in her work.
Bel Cowie exhibited regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh between 1974 and 1982. Examples of her work are in the Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museum.
She died suddenly in tragic circumstances in 1983 at the early age of 40. Works by her are now very hard to find.
Condition - it is in excellent condition with no condition problems.
This most attractive work by Cowie is being sold framed. The mount and frame appear to be the original vintage 1970s ones. It is nice and clean and all ready to just hang on your wall.
