![Large 1940s UPCHURCH British Studio Art Pottery Vase in Attractive Streaky Blue and Grey Glazes. Height: 10 inches](http://www.iconicedinburgh.co.uk/cdn/shop/files/21012025_0283_{width}x.jpg?v=1737481575)
This is a very collectable piece of British Art Pottery.
It was made by Upchurch - and has an incised Upchurch signature on the base, which you can just see under the thick glaze. I have a couple of attractive Upchurch vases currently in my online store, but this is the largest piece of Upchurch that I have ever owned.
The pottery was established in 1909 in Kent by the Wakely brothers (Seymour and Sidney). The most significant name associated with Upchurch Pottery is Edward Barker who established himself within the company before officially purchasing it in 1953. Edward passed away in 1955 but his older son William carried on the business until 1963 when sadly Upchurch Pottery ceased.
This Greek Style vase is a "must" for the collector of Upchurch wares. It is a lovely example with no damage.
It is a most attractive colour with subtle grey shades across the whole of the pot - and then with decorative streaks with runs of blue, darker grey and brown stripes of runny glaze running freely down the body of the pot. This vase is a nice large globular shape with shoulders at the neck area, as photographed. There are a pair of simple decorative handles on each side of the neck section. I have taken a lot of images for your inspection turning the vase around for these so you can see all the subtle variations all around on the thick glaze.
A nice thick - Ruskin-type glaze that has all been liberally applied by hand in the pottery studio. It is the Jackson Pollock of Upchurch vases .. lol!
To sum up - this is a very large and stylish piece of Upchurch Art Pottery. These large ones in this condition are much sought after and quickly snapped up when they come on the market.
Unpacked the weight is just over 1.6 kg
It is a larger size being some 10 inches in height and with a diameter at the widest point of about 8 1/2 inches. The aperture at the top is 4 1/2 inches. The base is the 51/4 inches in diameter
Unpacked the vase is a stonking 3.1 kg in weight.
It is a heavy piece - and this is reflected in my postage quote.
