This is a rather stunning piece of vintage Aldermaston pottery. It takes the form of a large country jug or pitcher.
It has a white tin glaze glaze and is decorated with hand-painted images of a hunting scene. The main decoration is confined to the bulbous section of the pot - and it shows deers and hares being chased by some dogs. The animals have not been caught as they are both so swift of foot - the artist certainly captures the speed of the chase and the fleeing moment in the pursuit. I have taken lots of images of all the details.
This pot would look just fabulous on a dresser in a country cottage - blue and white pottery is always sought after. It is also an exception size for a piece of Aldermaston Pottery.
The Aldermaston Pottery was founded in Berkshire in the 1950s by Caiger-Skith and Geoffrey Eastop. Over the years the studio has been home and training ground for many fine British art potters.
The monogram on the base of my big pitcher is for the ceramic artist, Andrew Hazelden. He studied ceramics at the Epsom School of Art and Design, and worked with renowned ceramicists Mary Wondrausch and Alan Caiger-Smith. He learned the technique of tin-glaze earthenware and reduction-fired lustre at Aldermaston Pottery in Berkshire, joining in 1984. My jug has obviously been influenced by 19th century blue and white Persian Pottery.
My jug is in excellent vintage condition with no damages.
The height is 11 3/4 inches and width point is 8 1/4 inches. From handle to spout it is about 7 3/4 inches. Unpacked it weighs 2.2 kg.
