These pieces of 1950s ceramics were designed by Tibor Reich for Denby. They are now considered iconic and classic pieces of modern design. They should be keepers for me - as they are such fantastic designs and now so hard to source. But I have decided to list them. Will I regret this?
This is a striking set of table wares. On offer are the items as shown: a stylized Coffee Pot (complete with lid), and a Jug with a long amorphic spout and a little mug (or is it a stylized sugar bowl with handle).
All pieces are free from chips or cracks and in good vintage condition. There is a tiny bit of glaze crazing to the inside of the lid - which is commensurate with age and cannot be seen when the lid of on the pot. I have taken an image of this for you (you can zoom in on it).
These pieces were designed in 1956 by Tibor Reich (1916 - 1996) for Denby Pottery and are highly sought after pieces of mid-century ceramics. The white pottery ground has been covered in a lightly textured matt black glaze, through this top layer of glaze sgraffito stripes on each piece have been made.
Dimensions: The Coffee Pot is 9 1/2 inches in height. From handle to spout is 8 1/2 inches. The little jug is 6 3/4 inches in height. The little handled mug is 4 1/8 inches in height.
I am pricing the pieces as follows: The coffee pot is £195; The mug is £75 and the strange jug (very rare) is £120. The prices are based on each pieces fine condition and also each piece still retaining its original paper labels on the base - all as photographed. You do;t find these wee matched pieces that often.
HISTORY: Tibor Reich was born in Budapest in 1916. He studied architecture and textiles in Vienna before moving to Britain in 1937. In 1946 he set up Tibor Ltd, introducing bright new colours and textures into the drab interiors of post-war Britain. The firm rapidly gained an international reputation working on commissions for the Festival of Britain, Expo ‘58 and Concorde.
‘Tigo Ware’ was launched in 1953 and was designed by Tibor Reich. Much of the range has scraffito decoration and Denby used a special white clay to contrast with the dark, often black, glaze. Reich was a versatile designer and may have been drawn ceramics in order to complement his textile designs. The most striking is the black and white tableware and vases evocative of the Beswick ‘zebra-striped’ ware and Midwinter ‘Zambesi’ of the same period.
