This is another post-war German surrealist print that I have in my store. It is by Curt Lahs (1893- 1958).
Lahs was born in Dusseldorf in Germany in 1893. In 1919 he had his first group show in the Galerie Flechtheim, Dusseldorf. In 1921 he became a member of the influential art collective, "Junge Rhineland".
In early 1930, he had teaching credentials at the State Art School in Berlin, taken away by the Nazis as a result of his "anti-fascist" activities. From 1933 to 1943, Lahs had numerous shows in France, Italy, and Yugoslavia, and in 1945 he participated in two well known shows at Galerie Gerd Rosen and Galerie Bremer.
He had a rather adventurous and avant guarde life - and there is a fuller biography about him on Wikipedia if you need more information.
This rare print is an original etching, signed in pencil on the lower margin, as photographed. . It is not dated but it was published in 1946. It is a rare early work by this artist and comes from an edition of 110 impressions. It is titled: Der Vogel (The Bird).
It is another strange German surrealist image. It features a strange flying bird, as photographed. The bird's eye is very unnerving - it looks more of a human one than an eye that you might find on a bird.
It has been re-framed with a new window mount and simple black frame. The frame measures 27 x 35 cm. The image is 17.5 x 24.7 cm.
