This is from a few listings of 1930s / 1940s Art Deco Perfume Bottles and Novelties that are listed in my store.
In the late 1930s Bourjois issued a series of miniature ‘Evening in Paris’ perfume bottles inside novelty blue bakelite containers. The most famous were the Grandfather Clock, the Owl and the Door. Steve Mankervis in his book ‘Plastic Passion’ (published by Schiffer) says these quirky containers are made of ‘Blue Mottled Phenolic.
This vintage Bourjois perfume holder in the shape of a Grandfather Clock is made of mottled blue Bakelite. It comes complete with its cobalt blue bottle for Evening in Paris perfume. The perfume bottle is empty. It is such a fine bottle - of long lozenge form and faceted all around is harder to find these bottles with near complete contents. It has a pale blue screw on bakelite cap with a silk white and blue tassel. I love this wee bottle!
The clock box still has its original textile liner to hold the glass bottle in place when it is closed.
The clock scent bottle holder measures 11 cm tall and the side is hinged to form a box to contain the perfume bottle. The cobalt blue miniature glass perfume bottle measures 8 cm length. It has its original silver and blue label.
The back is impressed at the top: 'Bourjois – London – Paris – Regd No. 837.401 – Made in England'.
The Clock and internal bottle are both in very good condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. The clock box is a harder one to source and is often sought after by collectors of doll's house miniatures to display in their little houses. This is a fair price for this vintage Bourjois collectable.
