These little vintage hanging plaques of little Scottish dancers doing the Highland Fling are certainly full of Scottish charm. They verge on being slightly kitsch - but they were very popular decorative items in their day!
These are now rare survivors and originally date to around the 1940s.
They are called Foil Art - and would have been put on display in a living room or parlour in the 40s. They are certainly very much of their time - and as fashions changed in the 1950s and 60s - these kitsch images fell out of favour and many of these wee pictures were thrown out. This makes them now rather hard to find. These are especially so as they are a matched pair and feature images of Scottish childhood.
They are in remarkable condition for their age - given that they were never originally made with the finest of materials - and were always low-cost items for you to decorate your house with.
The backing is a card material - and the front is a fine sheet of glass. Behind the glass on a glossy black background, the images are created with a collage of shiny textured foil papers, as photographed. Any white marks on the black areas are merely reflections in my photographs - as the black is very shiny!
This pair featuring cute Scottish dancers is indeed very fine and much sought-after. We have a little girl and boy dressed in mini-kilts. They both wear fine Scottish bonnets and have sporrans - the leap about in the air full of joy!
They are in good vintage condition - perhaps with only a little spotting to a couple of areas to the black glass on one of them. There are no chips or scratches to the glass, the backing card is in fresh condition with no tears or staining, all the foil glitters and is a good original colour. All the little simple metal clips and original hanging chains are still present as well.
They are a nice size for a smaller interior - measuring 12 inches high and 6 inches wide.
The interesting thing about one of these - is that the previous owner must have been worried about these getting stolen in the past - and has engraved lightly their postcode along the upper right-hand edge (you can hardly see this - only when a bright light hits it) - this is ML8 5NF. I have googled this and it is for an address in Carluke in Lanarkshire, Scotland.
