This is a unique hand-made little antique lidded casket.
It is in the Arts and Crafts manner - and looking back to earlier 17th century metal caskets for inspiration. It has a rather naive quality in the making, especially the decoration, so it might have been an early piece made by an apprentice metalworker - but it is a nicely made piece as you can see in my photographs.
It certainly has a lot of naive charm. It probably dates to the late 19th century / early 20th century. It has lots of hand-made rivets and applied strapwork "faux" hinges. I love the little lasp or pullover lock which fits over a little hoop section on the front - you could put a little padlock on it to keep the contents secure. I will supply with a teeny weeny miniature vintage padlock (not original to the box).
I love the two little mythical creatures on the front of the box. I think that they are Wyverns or similar dragon-type creatures. But a quirky motif to add to this wee brass box. The subject is carried on with the inclusion of little dragon feet at each of the corners and soldered onto the bottom of the box. There are little touches of the old solder when the feet have been applied, as photographed.
There is an inscription on the top: C Marks (either the maker or perhaps the recipient of the box). There are also two little applied ring handles on each side of the casket.
Dimensions: The length is 6 1/2 inches. The height is 3 1/4 inches and the depth is 2 3/4 inches.
It is a nice wee storage box for little trinkets or personal items, and will look good in a period interior. It is a sweet little one off piece and certainly a well made one. It is a fair price for this unique piece - you wont find another - especially if your name is C. Marks!
It is in excellent antique condition - with no nasty dents or losses.
