This is a lovely vintage Art Deco Bakelite or Phenolic Belt Buckle made of three colours of a vintage Bakelite or similar hard plastic. The outer wings are a blood-red colour - the central circle is a mock tortoiseshell and the applied carved dog motif is white and surrounded by a white raised circular ring - all as photographed.
It dates to around the late 1930s / 1940s and is probably French in origin. It is a rare survivor and I cannot find another quite like it.
The design features a strange creature in the centre - I cannot make up my mind if it shows the head of a white terrier-type dog or a gryphon-type figure. There are little metal hooks at the back which hold the buckle together and also two chrome bars where a fine suede or textile ribbon that would make up the belt itself would loop through. It would be used on a fine textile belt rather than a heavy leather one.
The buckle is in very good condition with no loss or damage. I have taken a lot of images for your inspection
Dimensions: Width, when closed, is 3 inches (7.5 cm). The height at the widest is 2 1/4 inches (5.7 cm). The width of the chromed metal belt loop a the back is (1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm).
The buckle will be packed up carefully in a wee sturdy box and sent to you in the UK for £4.95. This will be with Royal Mail Recorded post.
