This is a set of four antique textile plate mats. The mats are made of white cotton with silk fringed edging.
Each mat is printed with black ink from a printing plate with a comical image and a text below.
These are now rather rare survivors, especially in nice clean condition. They are now nearly 150 years old and they do not come up for sale that often.
My set consists of four printed images of relating to the subject of Victorian Street Life and Activities. I have photographed them as a group and taken close up images of each image.
The diameter of each mat is 7 1/4 inches. They would make interesting pictures to hang on your wall - if you had each of them popped into a little frame.
This set consists of the following: Thrift (two gentlemen conversing in the street). Rude Enquiry (Street "Arabs" or Gamins shouting at a Well-Dressed Gentleman). A Man and a Gentleman Conserving in the Street on Health Matters. And finally a Brigade Boy or Shoe Shine who is not happy with his tip and states the only polish on his customer is the polish now on his shoes!
I am listing these at £10 each mat.
