This is an unusual 1930s oval Art Deco wooden box.
This is a hard to find box. It is made with a thick wood making up the body of the box and this has been covered with a thin layer of burr walnut veneer. The veneer is in good vintage condition with no lifting or major losses to it. There is a tiny loss to near the edge of the lid, as photographed (but this is not so obviously when the work is on display, but only on close up inspection). The walnut veneer is nice and shiny in finish.
The base has applied ball feet to stop the bottom of the box being rubbed on a tabletop or desktop surface.
The box has a hinged lid which opens towards the back, as photographed.
Of course, the best thing about this box is the addition of the cast aluminium sculpture of the kneeling deer. This model is original to the box and not a later addition. It is certainly very Deco in style - and the modelling reminds me a little of similar white metal figures made by the Danish artist, Just Andersen. The box might be Scandinavian in origin - but there is no maker's mark on it.
The box is a nice size and would have probably been used to contain jewellery in and placed on a dressing table in a bedroom,
I have never seen another box like this - and indeed the little sculptural deer finial on the lid is also pretty rare.
It is certainly a harder to find and good Art Deco decorators piece and listed at a fair price. I have taken lots of images for your inspection so that you are able to see all the details.
