This is an attractive vintage paperweight made by Allan Scott for Jay Glass Studios (J Glass).
It was made in the late 1970s. It has an "A" cane for Allan Scott and comes in its original presentation box - with the initial "J" embossed in the top right-hand corner.
The paperweight is in good vintage condition. The A Cane is placed next to one of the flowers, as photographed. There also appears to be another tiny cane with the date next to the A one. The weight comes with its original box (rare survivor) with a white silk lining and a dark blue / black exterior on the box. The box lid has two flaps which fold out, as photographed. The box is in pristine vintage condition.
This pretty weight is very delicately and skillfully made. Not only does it have its central lampwork image - but around the side is has a total of 8 six circular polished viewing facets and below another 8 tall oval facets cut and polished at the base. These would have taken great skill to add.
The internal image is also just lovely - the lampwork items float in the centre of the paperweight in clear glass - there is no coloured ground on this weight. There are two purple and lilac flowers with lime green leaves - and floating about is a gossamer dragonfly / or butterfly - with lacy wings made of latticino glass twist canes. Totally adorable!
The paperweight measures just over 3 inches in diameter and 2 inches in height.
It is in good vintage condition with no damages. Generally - there are no condition issues with the weight - except for the tiniest nibble to the viewing fact on the top (at the 3 o'clock position) it has hardly visible - and it has been nigh on impossible for me to photograph it - it is the size of the tip of a pin! Please look at this area in the photographs that I have supplied. It would not take much for a specialist glass person to polish this out.
Unpacked this paperweight in its box weighs 610 grams.
HISTORY: Deacons Glass is a family-run studio still situated in Crieff, Scotland. The town has a long history of art glass manufacturing starting over 50 years ago in 1964 with Strathearn Glass, followed by Perthshire paperweights in 1968, J Glass in 1978, and finally Deacons Glass in 1980. John started as an apprentice with Strathearn Glass in 1967 but within a year was asked by the manager Stuart Drysdale to join his Perthshire Paperweights start-up team. It was here that John gained a thorough grounding in all aspects of running a glass studio.
After 10 years at Perthshire Paperweights, wished for more freedom to experiment with some of his own ideas. He left to set up his own studio - which he called J Glass (Jay Glass). The name came from "J" canes found in antique Bohemian paperweights that were a source of inspiration for John.
Allan Scott, the lampworker, joined John shortly afterward and together they explored what could be achieved with paperweight designs. J Glass was highly successful and expanded rapidly until the economic crash in 1980 which forced its closure. Please also see my J (Jay) Glass weight by Deacons - also for sale in my store.
J Cane and A Cane paperweights of this period are much sought after by specialist collectors - and this is reflected in my asking price for this lovely and highly skilled weight. The J (Jay) Studio was not in operation for very long and as such not so many weights now survive. It is also not so common to find them in their original boxes.
