This is certainly a very attractive paperweight to add to your collection. It was designed by the glass maestro at Caithness Glass, Colin Terris (1937 - 2006).
This one is called ARTIC NIGHT and it is an earlier weight that Terris designed for Caithness.
This early weight tries to capture the stillness and cold of the frozen Artic Landscape. There is a black mass in the centre of the weight covered on the top with sprinkles of white and blue glass to look like the snow. There is a large air bubble in the centre and this is surrounded with two concentric rings of controlled air bubbles.
The exterior of the weight is a slightly satin finish with a polished viewing facet to the front. This finish was achieved by finely sandblasting the surface of the paperweight, and then immersing it in a mixture of sulphuric and hydrofluoric acid - as you can imagine this was a highly dangerous process!!
The polished base is engraved 'Caithness, Artic Night, Scotland'. This paperweight comes complete with original box and certificate. It is a limited edition of 1500, this weight is numbered 478. For interest - initially the amount to be cast was 1500 but the actual number produced was limited to 839 (a common practice of Caithness).
