This is a lovely vintage candlestick designed in the 1980s by Timo Sapaneva (1926 - 2006) for Iittalia (there is a little, but scuffed, Iittala red sticker near the scone section. This indicates that this quality piece of Scandinavian glass was made in Finland. Sarpaneva's work was among the key components that helped to launch Finland's reputation as a trailblazer in modern design.
This series of clear glass with lots of internal bubbles - is inspired by the icy Finnish landscape and all its little islands contained in the frozen seas. It is called Archipelago.
It takes the form of a chunky clear glass ball that has been flattened at the poles - the top has a large aperture to hold a tealight - or thicker candle. The bottom has a little dimple - probably marking the pontil.
It is 9.5 cm in height and with a diameter of 8 cm. There is a good weight to it - unpacked it is just over 1.2 kg,
My candleholder is in good condition with no damage.
