This is a very fine decorative glass relief plaque made by Monica Backstrom for Kosta Boda.
It is one to two decorative glass plaques by her that I have in my store - this one is a larger plaque and it is also in its original black wooden frame.
It comes relates to her Frozen Images Series where she made a series of similar plaques looking at frozen Swedish Landscapes. My plaque has an etched signature and date in the bottom right-hand corner, as photographed.
Monica also made a similar plaque with the same composition but more muted colours - this one was a companion piece to the Sun - and it featured the Moon.
My plaque is in two fused sections - and looks at a big Northern setting sun which is reflected in a frozen lake below. I love all the zingy colours that Monica has used. The sun and its reflection are made from textured glass - this is on the back of the panel when on display - and the texture gives a warm mottled colour to the image on the front.
Monica Backström (1939–2020) was one of Sweden’s leading glass artists in the 20th and 21st centuries. After studying at the ”Konstfack” in Stockholm, she worked for the Kosta Boda Glassworks for more than 40 years. Her work is in the Swedish National Museum of Art and Design.
This plaque is 20 cm square. The wooden frame is 29 inches.
The glass plaque is made of thick slabs of glass and it has a good weight for it. It is nearly 4 kg in weight and be expensive to post. I will cap the postage for this at £10 for you - and make up any difference in postage costs.
It comes from my collection - and I bought it from new from the Kosta Boda Kiosk at the prestigious Jenners Department Store on Princes Street in Edinburgh - when I was working over the road at the National Gallery of Scotland - lunchtimes could prove to be expensive ventures out (tee hee!).
It is in good vintage condition with no damages.
It is a great piece for a more minimalistic Scandinavian interior.
