This is one of three of these sculptural glass bowls or vases in my online store.
This is one of two matched rich Cobalt Blue ones that I have listed - and I also have a taller clear one. The glass is a slightly darker blue shade than suggested in my images.
These pieces weres originally designed by the celebrated Finnish designer, Alvar Aalto in the 1930s. My ones are later examples and are part of The Alvar Aalto Collection made for Iittala.
This is certainly one of the most iconic Scandinavian pieces of glassware. The name of the vase is the Savoy - and it was originally commissioned by the Savoy Restaurant in Helsinki. Alvar Aalto was given a design brief to produced a vase and that the finished product must be able to perfectly display a single flower.
The organic shape that Aalto created suggests the flow and motion of running water or perhaps the undulating form of melting ice.
The minimalistic style is the hallmark of Aalto and the newly founded Artek. The Savoy Vase immediately became a sought after and popular design.
The first vases made in 1937 were made from wooden molds - but as demand for the Savoy vase increased - the original molds soon became worn and were subsequently replaced with more durable metal ones.
Production of the vase started at the Karhula Glassworks, and later in 1949 transferred over to Iittala. This is a later issue: lucky for me it is signed on the base ALVAR AALTO 851 / 1994. It also has a red Iittala sticker.
This vase is part of a vintage series made from the metal molds - the exterior of these pieces is completely smooth outside - and there is a laser produced signature on the interior of the base (as photographed).
My one has the an original red Iittala label.
This vase is about 1 7/8 inches in height, and the width at the widest point is 7 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches. Unpacked it is nearly 430 grams.
It is in generally fine vintage condition - no disfiguring chips or cracks. This is certainly a lovely piece of mid-century Scandinavian glass - it would be perfectly at home on a stylish teak or rosewood coffee table.
