This is one of three of these sculptural Savoy glass bowls or vases in my online store.
This is a taller sided clear one - and I have also two more shallow matched blue ones that I have listed. It is the smallest size in the range.
These pieces were originally designed by the celebrated Finnish designer, Alvar Aalto back in the 1930s.
This is certainly one of the most iconic Scandinavian pieces of glassware. The name of the vase is the Savoy - and it was originally commissioned by the Savoy Restaurant in Helsinki. Alvar Aalto was given a design brief to produced a vase and this stipulated that the finished product must be able to perfectly display a single flower.
The organic shape that Aalto created suggests the flow and motion of running water or perhaps the undulating form of melting ice.
The minimalistic style is the hallmark of Aalto and the newly founded Artek. The Savoy Vase immediately became a sought after and a very popular design.
The first vases made in 1937 were made from wooden molds - but as demand for the Savoy vase increased - the original molds soon became worn and were subsequently replaced with more durable metal ones.
Production of the vase started at the Karhula Glassworks, and later in 1949 transferred over to Iittala.
This vase is part of a vintage series made from the metal molds. There is a signature (etched inside and appears on reverse if you look on the base) used on slightly earlier pieces - and this will date this one to around the 1950s or early 1960s.
These smaller versions of the vase, just as Aalto designed them with the seams visible and a slight curve at the base,
This small Savoy Vase is about 3 3/4 inches in height, and the width is 4 1/4 inches by about 4 inches (the shape is like an amoeba). Unpacked it is nearly 330 grams.
It is in generally fine vintage condition - no disfiguring chips or cracks. This is certainly a lovely piece of mid-century Scandinavian glass - it would be perfectly at home on a stylish teak or rosewood coffee table.
It will be sent to you with Royal Mail Recorded Delivery. This will cost £5.50 and applied to your order at the checkout.
