Ian and Maggie Kinnear have been producing distinctive ceramics at Oathlaw Pottery in Forfar (Scotland) since 1988.
I have previously listed and sold a stunning candlestick by Ian on my site (biographical details about Ian are on that listing).
Maggie studied at Glasgow University and graduated as a M.A. in 1965. She taught English in Glasgow before starting a family.
Both Ian and Maggie set up the Insh Pottery in Inverness-shire in 1979 and for the next nine years ran a successful pottery business. During this period, Ian continued to paint and exhibit his work. The Kinnear's were also commissioned by the Tay Yacht Club to produce commemorative ceramics for their Centenary.
Ian and Maggie moved to Angus in 1988 and established the Oathlaw Pottery Studio on a full-time basis. Since then they have continued to exhibit their work throughout Scotland. Their distinctive ceramics have been widely exhibited throughout Scotland and Ireland. Examples from the Oathlaw Pottery are in the collection of Aberdeen Art Gallery.
This is a very useable little stoneware domed dish. It would be great for storing and serving pats of butter or for keeping little rounds of cheese. It is stamped with Margaret's mark, as photographed.
The base is a dark heather purple colour - with a lip around the edge to stop contents from falling off and to hold the dome in place. The dome is decorated with random blue. brown and rust coloured glazes. These have been quickly applied with a brush. The rust colour suggest little water birds and there are hints of blue to reflect the water.
Dimensions: the base plate is 5 inches in diameter. The overall height of the dome including the handle is 4 inches. The interior dimensions of the dome is just over 4 inches in diameter and the height is about 2 inches.
