This is a lovely vintage Italian Murano paperweight. It is certainly a bit of a show-stopper. And is of a magnum size.
There would have originally been a paper maker's label on the base that would have helped me to identify the maker. I know that it is a beautifully and skillfully made weight - and would hazard an attribution to 3 Fiori. But for my description - I am just going to call it a fabulous mid-century Murano closepack one.
There is an other ring of little blue and pink millefiori canes - these are set into a clear floating ground that you often find on Murano weights. Then across the center there are three red twist long canes. Sandwiched between the red canes are larger rosettes with a central cane millefiori cane and a ring around each, all this has been photographed in close up. One line of rosettes have white cabbage type roses in the center.
All the cane are so carefully placed and have such pretty colours, mostly in shades of blue. The base has a polished large central pontil area. It is an unusual shape - when looked at from above all the millefiori canes appear to go right up to the edge - but when the weight is viewed from the bottom there seems to be a thicker bank of clear glass. The smoothed pontil mark only goes as far as the outer ring when seen from below.
It is a larger weight. Dimensions: height of 2 1/4 inches and with a diameter of 3 1/2 inches. The weight is in excellent condition with no damages. It is certainly a bit of a stunner and this is all reflected in my asking price. You won't be disappointed with it.
