Archie McCall was born in Dumfries in 1951. His career in ceramics began in 1970 as an apprentice to the potter John Davey at Bridge of Dee, Kirkcudbrightshire. (Please see my other dishes I have listed on my website by John Davey).
He entered Edinburgh College of Art in 1978, studying Painting and Ceramics. After graduating in 1982, he continued his studies in Edinburgh at postgraduate level. On graduation he taught ceramics at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee. In 1983 he was employed at the Glasgow School of Art. He worked there for over 25 years - and eventually became Head of Ceramics (1992) and then Programme Leader for all the BA (Hons) Programmers in the School of Design. So he is certainly a prestigious person in the contemporary Scottish arts scene.
He has also exhibited, lectured and delivered workshops extensively throughout the world since retiring from GSA in 2013. His work is represented in a number of international collections
Today, Archie lives with his wife at Kindar Mill, New Abbey, Dumfries in southwest Scotland. It is the natural environment of this area which has inspired much of the work throughout his career.
Archie McCall's work is richly decorated with glaze, pigments and lustre. The surfaces are painstakingly built up using layer-upon-layer of glazes and oxides then fired to 1300 degrees centigrade. A further firing at 780 degrees centigrade is required to fuse the gold or other lustres to the final piece. Each piece he creates is unique.
Archie said of his work "I hope the pots and their surfaces are filled with life. Of things being born, growing, and maturing; things that have come from the earth and which will eventually return there.”
This is a fabulous large bowl by McCall. It is signed in gold on the base. The main body colour is a dark black oxide glaze and this is embellish with organic forms and abstracted flowers. It is a large and substantial piece of Scottish Art Pottery. The shallow bowl looks so fabulous on display. It has a diameter of 13 inches. The height is 3 1/2 inches in height. The weight unpacked is 2.2 kg.
Due to the size and weight of this large bowl, I would be unable to post outside of the UK. It would be sent to you in the UK with Parcelforce24. This will cost just over £10 and applied to your order at the checkout. Free Delivery is available in the Edinburgh area.
