This listing here is for a very collectable 1960s wooden chopping board or tray (there are cut-away handle sections on the base of the teak section, as photographed). It is a lovely board for a mid-century kitchen and would look good on a dining table to pop serving dishes on - or just as a decorative item to display on it. You won't be disappointed with it.
This board was probably produced by Wynncraft or Go-Gay and the tiles were designed by Ann Clark (nee Ann Reeves Wynn). They are abstract designs inspired by red fruits (I think her red cherries design made in 1958) hanging on a spindly branch. Each tile has the same pattern on it - as mirror images - so they form a more panoramic continued image. It seems that this design was further extended to form a larger multi-panel scene with not only the red fruits but tree sections rising up and having birds sitting on the branches. So a versa-tile (pardon the pun!) design. The tiles are original 1950s ones and not later Robert Opie reproduction.
These stylised 1950s tiles and Wynncraft chopping boards are now very collectable especially in such lovely condition.
I have taken lots of images for your inspection.
These vintage chopping boards are very hard to source now - and this is reflected in my asking price (especially when it is in such fabulous condition).
Dimensions: The length of the board is 15 inches and the width is just over 7 inches. The height is just over 1/2 inch. The tile is a standard 6 inches square one. Being made from a thick slab of heavy teak wood - it has a good bit of weight to it - unpacked it is 1.3 kg.
It is in excellent vintage condition with a nice glossy surface. I don't think that it has ever been used - as there are no cutlery marks on the tiles and the teak board section is damage free - no chips or stains to the wood. I think that this has been hung on a wall as a display item - as there is an old hanging mechanism on the back as photographed - this can be easily removed or used to hang your board.
BIOGRAPHY: Kenneth Clark Ceramics was set the ceramic artists and designers Ann Clark (nee Wynn Reeves) and her husband Kenneth Clark, in the early 1950’s. The business ran until the early 2000’s.
They were based in Covent Garden, London until 1980 when they moved the business to Southover Grange in Lewes, Sussex. They specialised in hand decorated tiles, mostly designed by Ann, with Kenneth’s richly coloured glazes. Their highly inventive and original work received much acclaim and they were credited with reinventing the tile as an art form. There are examples of their work in the V & A and numerous private collections.
