I love these little antique spill vases - and always try to find nice ones for my store.
This is an attractive antique later 19th-century Staffordshire model of a little sheep. It is a spill vase and stands next to a tree stump (with a rose-pink interior).
The sheep stands on a raised oval base which is decorated to look like a grassy mound with a little water stream running down the middle. The mound is painted with loose brushstrokes of colour in chocolate brown, emerald green and ochres shades. There are little patches of bocage at the foreground.
It is in good antique condition with no damages. Both little pointed pink ears are intact and damage-free. I cant believe that his little slim legs have survived all this time without being broken. He is a nice one of his type for sure!
It is nicely modelled and I like the rough application of shredded clay to suggest the sheep's woolly coat. This type of embellishment is often seen on Staffordshire models of poodles. There is tiny bits of losses to the textured clay here and there - but mostly to the back, as photographed. I think that the losses to the textured hair occurred in the making. This has been taken into account with my pricing. The little sheep looks so sweet on display
Dimensions: Height to the top of the tree is just 5 inches. The width is 4 1/4 inches. The depth of the model is about 2 3/4 inches.
