This is a lovely antique white pottery chicken or hen on a nest dish. These little quirky dishes would have been used in farmhouses or cottages to store little eggs - or simply as decorative items on a Welsh dresser.
The little hen is made from pottery with white glossy glaze to the top section. The chicken has little bits of the original gold gilding on some of its feathers, as photographed, and in particular around the head. There is red original paintwork around the eyes. Mrs Hen is sitting on her eggs awaiting them to hatch out as little chicks. The eggs are quite abstracted in from and appear as little white balls in front of the nesting hen. There is unusual (and original) bright blue wash on the ground area below her. It looks very attractive on display. Taken lots of photographed for your inspection
The base is original to the upper section and it fits together perfectly. The base has a shiny dark ochre-yellow glaze exterior and a white interior. It is a good antique example dating to the late 19th Century / early 20th century.
It is in fine condition with no nasty chips or cracks in the dish or chicken. The model is nice and clean with no dirty marks. There is a very tiny hairline to the back of the chicken to the bottom - this is hardly noticeable but noted for accuracy. This is also reflected in my asking price for this attractive antique hen on nest.
Dimensions: The height of the hen to the top of her tail is roughly 7 1/2 inches (19 cm). The length of the hen is 8 inches. The nest section is shiny and glazed and measures: 9 x 7 1/4 inches.
A very fair price for this most attractive and indeed very decorative example. The postage quoted is for Parcelforce24. This will be just over £10 and applied at check out.
