These are a lovely and very decorative pair of 1950s vintage chalkware wall plaques. They are dated 1954.
They take the form of a pair of Mexican dancers and both are in perfect condition. Given that the chalkware medium is very fragile compared to ceramics - it is amazing that these have survived so long in such pristine condition. They are nearly 70 years old now - and look as if they were made just recently.
I can very accurately date these wall hangings - as the gentleman has an incised maker's mark on the top edge - this says that they were made at the International Statuary Company (Chicago, USA) in 1954, as photographed.
HISTORY: Universal Statuary Corp. was founded in Chicago in the 1930s. They produced piggy banks, wall plaques, and large store displays, including Indian statues for Western-themed restaurants. In the 1950s, they produced chalkware lamps, usually featuring paired male and female figures, and other home decors that are now highly collectible.
They are a nice large size for display - and would look fantastic as a focal point on the wall of a 50s mid-century modern interior.
You do not find these very often in Scotland. I have owned these for a good number of years - and had them carefully packed away in a sturdy box and I had forgotten that I even had them.. hence the fantastic condition.
Each figure measures: 12 1/2 x 7 1.2 inches.
My price reflects the age, rarity and condition of this attractive pair. They do not appear on the UK market that often - so if you like them...
UK Posting Only. I would have to post to you in a large box - with each figure packed separately inside for safety. I would have to use Parcelforce 48 which will cost £10 and applied to your order at checkout.
