This is a sweet little religious Quimper / French pottery figurine. It is one of a small group of antique figures that I have available in the online Iconic Edinburgh shop.
Quimper Faience (tin-glazed pottery) was produced near Quimper in Brittany in France. The pottery was first established in 1708. The decoration is all painted by hand.
It is a little miniature figure of Saint Marie / the Virgin Mary walking with her child, the Baby Jesus. She is wearing her customary long blue veil and blue clock which is lined with red and yellow stripes. She wears a long dress covered with pretty green and yellow flowers. The Virgin has a golden yellow coloured crown - which is hollow and would enable you to use this model as a candlestick at Christmas.
Saint-Marie is also a commune in Brittany in north-west France - so it also acts as a piece of local interest.
This is certainly a pretty and smaller model; perfect for your display cabinet.
The figure measures 8 1/4 inches in height. It is all hand-painted - and it is totally delightful.
A genuine piece dating to the late 19 century / early 20th century
It is inscribed on the base: Ste Marie PPN (short for Priez Pour Nous or Pray for Us) and an embossed number 2 on the back, as photographed. It is unsigned - so hard to assess which Quimper factory or maker was involved in the production of this one.
It is in perfect antique condition with no damages.
