This is a more unusual and larger sized religious Quimper / French pottery figurine. It is one of a small group of antique figures made in France that I have available in the online Iconic Edinburgh shop.
Quimper Faience (tin-glazed pottery) was produced near Quimper in Brittany in France. The pottery was first established in 1708. The decoration is all painted by hand.
It is an antique sculptural figure of the Virgin Mary / Madonna.
She holds a chubby baby Jesus in her arms. He is dressed in a blue baby outfit.
His mother is shown wearing a long bright skirt which is decorated with little abstract lines. The bodice is a drab green colour - and the colour almost runs into the coloured glazes of the baby. She wears her traditional blue veil and cloak. Again, another big and chubby baby.
She is very naively modelled - and is totally adorable - check out her bushy painted eyebrows! The figure is made of a light brown coloured pottery - and it looks like it has been made from pouring liquid clay into a mould. After the first firing and colour of the figure - the sculpture is coated in a tin glaze - which is slighted grey-white in colour. She is more skillfully modelled than the other ones in my store - she has modelled hands rather than ones which have been quickly painting on with sharp stroke of black paint from the decorator's brush.
This is certainly an attractive Quimper figurine; perfect for your display cabinet.
The figure measures 10 inches in height. The base plinth is 4 inches x 3 1/2 inches. It is all so beautifully hand-painted - and I just love the wee face of the baby.
A genuine piece dating to the late 19 century / early 20th century
It is unsigned - so hard to assess which Quimper factory or maker was involved in the production of this one. There is an old paper stock label on the inside - but I just can't quite make it out.
Again, it is in perfect antique condition with no damages.
