This is an unusual little religious Quimper / French pottery figurine. It is one of a small group of antique figures made in France that I have available in the online Iconic Edinburgh shop.
Quimper Faience (tin-glazed pottery) was produced near Quimper in Brittany in France. The pottery was first established in 1708. The decoration is all painted by hand.
It is a little miniature figure of the Virgin Mary / Madonna. She holds a cubby baby Jesus in her arms.
She is shown wearing a blue striped dress with yellow edging to the hem, neckline, and sleeves. She wears her traditional blue veil and cloak. Check out the chubby baby!
She is very naively modelled - and is very sweet. The figure is made of a light brown coloured pottery - and it looks like it has been made from pouring liquid clay into a mould - the tin glaze is applied after first firing and is slightly grey-blue in colour - and coats the inside quite liberally applied - all the details are hand-painted.
This is certainly an attractive and slightly quirky model; perfect for your display cabinet.
The figure measures 8 1/4inches in height. It is totally delightful.
A genuine piece dating to the late 19 century / early 20th century
It is unsigned - so hard to assess which Quimper factory or maker was involved in the production of this one.
It is in perfect antique condition with no damages.
