This is a highly collectable antique Classical-style table lamp. It dates to the late 19th century / early 20th century. It takes the form of an antique Corinthian column.
It has an impressed markers mark "OSLER" stamped on the underside of the base, as photographed. These Osler lamps are much sought-after and of top-quality; this is reflected in my price.
HISTORY: The maker of my lamp is the company F & C Osler, London.
In 1807, Thomas Osler founded a glass-making firm in Birmingham and started producing glass ornaments for chandeliers. His sons, Follett and Clarkson took over the firm in 1852 – and it was from then on known as F&C Osler & Co. They were soon considered internationally as one of the finest markers of fantastic glass chandeliers and fancy lights.
Osler's were know for the high quality of their products and their goods were sought after by aristocratic European houses and Indian Royalty. They undertook commissions for Queen Victoria. Their international success led to the company to producing top of the range “exhibition pieces”. Perhaps their best known piece was the monumental four tonne cut-glass grand Crystal Fountain at the 1851 Great Exhibition, held at the Crystal Palace, London. Their glass wares were certainly indicative of a period of luxury and grandeur in British lighting manufactures. Their chandeliers and lamps are still always much prized items.
DESCRIPTION: My lamp has a square shape base and stands on four little paw feet - with decorative corner. There is a raised decorative border which runs all around - it consists of little Classical palmette motifs. The base is made of gilded brass or bronze - and I haven't done any cleaning to it - but left the lamp with its original antique patina of age. The details of the decoration are certainly lovely.
The interesting thing about this antique Osler lamp is that the column is not made of brass - but of clear crystal. There is a circular crystal stepped base on the column - from which issues the pillar section. This is clear crystal and faceted all around. You can even see the cable running through up to the bulb holder section.
On top of the crystal column with have a fine cast metal Corinthian capital. The details on this are again very fine. The bulb holder is a replacement to the lamp - so that it could be fitted with an earth for your safety. It has the new bulb holder with on off switch and also it has been re-wired with an old-fashioned style cloth covered cable.
The strange little white ivory knop coming out from below the base is the original finger on and off switch. We have left this (and its mechanism) in place as a decorative feature - but it is now no longer functioning - and has been superseded in its use by the switch on the bulb holder.
We have added a long length of cable to the lamp. This measures about 3 metres - so you can make sure the lamp makes your nearest socket with ease.
CONDITION: There is no issues with the lamp - apart from the replaced brass bulb holder. There are no chips or issues with the crystal parts - and no dents or breaks to the metal parts. It is nice and clean - and will be just ready for you to plug in and use.
Dimensions: The overall height including bulb holder is 17 1/4 inches (44 cm). The base to the top of the Corinthian capital is 15 inches (38 cm). The size of the Osler glass pillar section is 11 1/4 inches. The base is 5 1/2 inches square from lion paw to paw.
We will pack up very carefully - and it will be shipped to you in the UK fully insured with Royal Mail recorded delivery. This will cost about £24.95 and applied to your order at the checkout.
