This 1940s / 1950s Japanese woodblock print shows a distant view of Mount Fuji. It is pencil signed by the artist.
The print was made by Gihachiro Okuyama - who was famed for his shin-hanga and sosaku-hanga works. He is best known for his exceptionally fine landscape woodblocks.
Gihachiro Okuyama began as a commercial artist, creating advertising art for many different companies and establishing his own advertising company in 1931. He created successful commercial art for the Japan Wool Company and Nikka Whiskey. He started to study the art of printmaking in the early 1920s and first exhibited his work through the Nihon Sosaky Hanga Association in 1927. Later in the 1940s he created his own publishing company - the Nihon Hanga Kenkyusho (the Japan Print Institute) to create a place for Hanga artists to publish and market their woodblocks.
This fine view of the Pass at Yui Satsuta - is entitled "Yui Satsuta Tonge". In the distance, we can see the snow-covered peak of Mount Fuji. I love the artist's use of all the beautiful traditional blue shades in this vintage woodblock. It is an original print and the ink bleeds through to the back of the sheet - as you might expect to find. The sheet has not been glued down onto a backing board - and have photographed for your inspection the sheet to show that it is not laid down.
It is pencil signed by the artist lower right - and has the publisher's mark to the left-hand margin, as photographed. It is a genuine woodblock print and in good condition. It is well presented and I have had it framed all ready for you to hang on your wall. I have included images here of the margins etc - and another showing the printed sheet - so you can see that it has not been glued down and the sheet is in fine condition. Please examine all my photographs carefully. There is a tiny little crease to the sheet at the top right hand corner - please look at my photographs of this area.
The print has been professionally framed for sale and has a new fresh window mount. It is nice and fresh and all ready for you to hang on your wall.
