This is a really lovely antique bisque pottery chicken or hen on a nest lidded dish.
These little dishes would be used in farmhouses or cottages to store little eggs.
The little hen is made from a bisque white un-glazed pottery - and with applied colours to head and wattle. She is sitting on her eggs awaiting them to hatch out as little chicks. The feathers are depicted with great detail.
The base is original to the upper section and it fits together perfectly. The base has an ochre-yellow glaze exterior and a shiny white interior.
It is a fine Victorian example dating to the late 19th Century.
It is in just lovely condition with no chips or cracks to the dish or chicken. The model is nice and clean with no dirty marks.
Dimensions: The height of the hen to the top of her tail is roughly 6 1/2 inches (16 cm) – the nest section is shiny and glazed and measures: 8 x 6 1/2 x 2 1/4 inches.
A very fair price for this most attractive and indeed very decorative example.
