This is a fine piece of Ruska Pottery - which is made of chunky stoneware and has a subtle mottled matt brown glaze. It is a medium size pot in the range.
“Ruska” means “autumn” in Finnish and it was used by the designer Ulla Procope to evoke the earthy and rustic colours of the Finnish autumn landscape. The glazed surface was created with an unusual decorating method: powdered black iron was sprayed on top of a matte base glaze, giving each piece a slightly unique artisan and smoky look. The traditional rustic colour of the glazing shifts in tone from paler to more deep tones.
This is a harder-to-find large lidded Ruska casserole dish or serving dish - it dates from the early 1960s and was designed by the celebrated Finnish designer Ulla Procope. It retains its original white printed mark to the base, as photographed.
This is a great piece for a mid-century interior. These traditional Finnish stoneware items are now keenly sought after. Arabia Pottery is always made to the best quality - and these Ruska pieces are quite exceptional. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. Of course, it is sold nice and clean and ready to use.
Dimensions: the pot is 6 inches in height. It has a diameter of 6 1/4 inches. A heavy dish - unpacked it is 1.8 kg in weight.
