This is a beautiful Victorian brooch dating to around the 1880s.
It is a beautiful LARGER example.
It is a round shape with a Cross shape in the centre. The cross is made of coloured Scottish agates set in silver - and the background has been cut away so that you can see through this area. In between the arms of the Cross and four shield shapes - also inset with polished agates. The Cross and Shields section is raised proud and away from the silver and agate ring below - where the pin is attached. The pin is typically Victorian in design and fitting. The point is sharp and undamaged.
All the stones are in good antique condition with no cracks to them. There is a very tiny chip to the top left corner of one of the shield agates - you cannot see this with the naked eye - but have to look under a magnifying glass. You can super size the area in my photographs. I have reduced the price to reflect this.
The agates are surrounded by silver edging decorated with teeny weeny dots. The whole of the back is covered in a layer of this sterling silver - as you find on antique Scottish pieces.
There is an antique Victorian lozenge mark on the back as well, as photographed.
The pin is as you would find on antique Scottish jewellery - with a simple c-curl clasp. The brooch also has a little closed ring section on the top at the back. This is where you might insert a chain to the brooch - so that it is going to be double secure.
This is a nice large Scottish brooch: it has a diameter of 5 cm (2 inches) - this is a much bigger than usual type of agate brooch. It will look great on a scarf or a plaid. A real quality genuine Victorian piece - this is reflected in my asking price.
I have taken close-up photographs - so please examine these closely to check the condition. It is nice and clean. It is an eye-catching and very attractive example.
