This is a very hard-to-find vintage 1960s Danish cake stand and dome - or cheese board and dome.
It is marked to the base: Digsmed, as photographed.
The company designed and produced high-quality household goods. They were best known for their fine Lazy Susan's and rotating spice racks. Digsmed worked with the Danish wood factory, Nissen Langå (who also worked with Dansk Designs and Quistgaard) to produce the teak parts of their designs. They always produced items to such high standards, and these are now very sought after by mid-century collectors.
The Digsmed company closed in 1975.
The base of my serving dish revolves on a little circular foot so that you can turn the contents to guests at your dining table - so they do not have to reach over.
It is a nice large size and has an overall diameter for the teak base plate of 13 3/4 inches.
The base is made of teak - so I would pop a little plate on this for serving and not directly onto the wood - so keep it all clean and free from cutlery marks etc.
It has a large domed cover - original to the lazy susan - and this is not made of glass - but of clear plastic. It is amazing that it has survived for about 50 years with no damage. It is a very rare survivor - and a stylish mid-century shape. I have never seen another like it - or of this large size. There is a little teak knop on the top to allow you to easily lift off the domed cover.
The serving board and dome are in excellent condition. The teak base has been cleaned and polished before sending it to you - so that it is tip-top.
There are no cutlery marks on the base section and it turns nice and smooth. The grain of the wood is just lovely.
These Scandinavian Digsmed serving items are now highly sought after. It is probably an item for the more specialist collector of mid-century Danish teak wares. A true design icon!
