This is a lovely antique Parian model of a reclining greyhound. It is a nice larger piece and looks fabulous on display.
Parian ware was first made at the Copeland Factory in England in about 1841. It is a white un-glazed fine porcelain resembling marble, named after the Greek Island of Paros. In the 1840s, Parianware offered the less wealthy a chance to collect small scale copies of famous marble sculptures which were reduced from full to miniature size using the pantograph. Minton, Worcester, Wedgwood and Belleek among others also produced Parian porcelain.
This lovely Victorian model of a reclining greyhound probably dates to the 1850s / 1860s. It is unmarked - so I have been unable to assign a maker to it. But it is certainly a fine one with exquisite modelling.
It is a fine addition to a traditional Georgian / Victorian interior. This is taken into consideration with my pricing. It remains a rather rare piece of antique Parian; many are now in museums and special collections.
It is unmarked which is surprising as it is certainly beautifully modelled - with all the features of the dogs face finely rendered and all musculature of the dog well defined. It is lovely on display with shadows created on the white bisque porcelain finish. The figurine is certainly full of life and it looks like Mr Greyhound is just about ready to spring to his feet and into action.
The greyhound is shown seated on a classical plinth with cutaway corners, as photographed. The greyhound is stretched out with both legs and paws stretched out in front. His back legs are tucked under - and the weight is shown as being resting on the back leg. I love how his little back paw and tail juts out slightly over the edge of the plinth. The face on his model is very attractive and again well modelled - often the face is quite clumsy or basic in execution.
I have taken lots of oodles of images for your inspection. It has a little area of restoration to the base of the plinth at the back - but being confined to the base - you do not see this when it is on display. This is reflected in a reduced price. Pity - that it has no maker's mark - but it is certainly by a quality maker. You won't be disappointed with it.
Dimensions: The length of the base is 11 1/2 inches. The width of the base is 4 1/8 inches. The overall height of the model is 6 1/2 inches.
It is a substantial model and has a good bit of weight to it. It is nearly 1.7 kg in weight.
