This is an early 19th-century copper English Country House Lantern.
Please note that this is being sold as a genuine antique lantern - it is not a modern reproduction piece.
It is of an exceptionally large size and is in good antique condition.
It would have originally been sited outside on the porch beside the entrance to the main house doorway to light it up. It would have been originally an oil lamp - but has been converted at some point in the past to function indoors with electric power.
It currently has a cloth-covered electric flex and this connects to a little flame-shaped bulb inside the lantern. It lights up and looks very stunning. It would now look perfect inside on a hallway table or conservatory - or even as a "talking point" in a sitting room or library.
It has a bracket on the back which is quite solid and original to the lantern - and this would allow you to mount it onto a wall if you wish - I had it on a tabletop surface.
This old lantern comes from my own personal collection and I have owned it for many years - I had it on a tall chest of drawers in my bedroom - and I have always looked after it very well. As you can see it is in excellent antique condition - the copper is all nice and shiny clean - but still retains a patina of age. All the glass panels on the main lantern body are in place - and the original oil burner / reservoir is still present inside - - it looks the part and is so pretty. Of course, lovely and clean with no grubbiness.
The door has a little clip which allows you to open and close the door at the front of the lantern. When clipped shut the lantern is secure. The back panel and internal reflector of the lantern is a highly polished copper which gives extra brightness to the light inside it.
I love the external canopy - with its four little bobble-topped knops at each corner - on each sloping side - there is a raised geometric decoration - a little like a flower with only four petals. On the top is a very attractive large mushroom-shaped chimney.
A beautiful lantern with no dents or splits to the metalwork - and no issues with the glass panes. I will certainly be sad to part with it - but I have been moving some things about at home and space has become more of a premium.
You won't find another quite so lovely and all ready to light up so easily. We have used it without issue for years - but with all pre-loved electrical items - I would recommend that you get an electrician to just give it a wee once over for you.
Dimensions: overall height to the top of the chimney section is 20 1/2 inches. The width of the lantern body is 10 3/4 inches. The depth is 8 3/4 inches. The diameter of the chimney on the top is 4 3/4 inches.
It has about 4 metres of cable.
Unpacked it weighs over 4.4 kg
Obviously, due to the size and weight - it will have to be posted in a rather large box in the UK with Parcelforce. This will probably cost about £20 to send it triple-boxed. This will be applied at the checkout.
