This is a very attractive etching by the celebrated printmaker, George Vernon Stokes (1873 - 1954).
It is one of two animal etchings by Stokes that I have listed in my store - the other features Siamese Cats.
Stokes was a painter and illustrator of animals, He exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy from 1907.
He probably took up colour etching in the 1930’s and devised his own system which is described in his book "Colour Etching in two Printings", published in 1933.
This beautifully rendered etching shows three little Border Terriers standing at the side of an overgrown river bank. They hear a noise in the water and a little creature disappearing under the surface and all that is left are ripples. They are curious as to what has caused the noise and two to them peer into the murky waters.
It is a coloured drypoint etching and an early impression from a limited edition numbered 65/75.
It is signed in pencil in the margins below the image - and also on the plate.
The etching measures 26 x 28.5 cm. The mount size is 45 x 46 cm.
