This is a very charming watercolour by the Scottish artist, Jack Firth (1917 - 2010). It shows the old stone tower which functioned as a dovecot or doocot. It is located just outside of Tantallon Castle, near North Berwick. The scene is shown from a very strange angle - looking down from on high as almost a bird's eye view - but strangely from this angle, it has no inclusion of the Castle or the Bass Rock.
There appears to be a golf course in the foreground with a group of tiny golfers carrying their clubs.
The watercolour is sold in its original frame - this is thick mahogany moulding with decorative gold trim around the top edge. It is glazed. Dimensions: The frame size is 30 x 34 cm and the image size is 13.5 x 18.5 cm
BIOGRAPHY: John Beaton Firth ("Jack") was born in Edinburgh in 1917. He attended Edinburgh College of Art from 1935 to 1939 under William Gilles, John Maxwell and William MacTaggart.
He lived in Edinburgh for most of his life and was involved in the local art community, which culminated in his election to the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW) in 1961. He served twice as the RSW's vice president. He exhibited widely, including at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Society of Scottish Artists.
Firth`s work has also been bought by public institutions (such as Aberdeen Art Gallery and Edinburgh and Glasgow City Art collections) and features in numerous corporate collections.
He painted mostly in a traditional style and his best work focuses on Scottish coastlines and scenes in the French countryside. His watercolours displayed great individuality and were characterised by a distinctive vitality of colour.
There are been a recent growing interest in his work and this is reflected in my asking price for this very attractive jewel-like watercolour by Firth. It is in lovely condition with no issues - and as you can see in my photographs - all the colours are nice and fresh with no fading. There is also interest in the subject of pretty Scottish golfing scenes.
